Reading Specialist

I have been a teacher for close to 25 years at the secondary school level. I began teaching without any formal training. I was fortunate to work with very committed senior teachers who encouraged collaboration and team work which assisted in my professional development.
Over the years, I found that students were having difficulties in reading but I was not equipped to deal with the problem.I did not know how to diagnose the problems and how to assist them .My adolescent students were in dire need of professional help.I had to get on board when I heard of this programme.I wish I had some of this training 20 years ago but I still have time to make a contribution to the students and teachers with whom I interact.
All teachers need to see themselves as "Teachers of Reading" and be ready to move into a 21st century mode of teaching using as many different strategies and ICT tools to enhance learning and teaching for diverse learners

  1. Wendy-Ann,

Your introduction to teaching reading remind me so much of my own journey. I agree with your view, but would like to add, not only should all teachers be teachers of reading, but they should be trained to do the job so that what is delivered would be well informed and based on research and best practices.

  2. Wendy Ann,
Congrats on the blog. I agree the view you explored in your blog. It is really sad that after so many years this type of training is now offered. Anyway better late that never. The exposure of the various tools in this course i.e. EDRL 6004 is to me very stimulating. I am seeing now how truly behind the time we (the teaching fraternity) truly is. I am very grateful for the opportunity to experience this training. I believe that it will not only help with the delivery of the curriculum but also with my own personal development. To coin a phrase "I love this course". I would like to express to you that I am really impressed with your blog an the strides you have made so far especially with the technology...Keep it up and you know that I'm always here if you need my help..:)(I'm not too sure if the smiley face is proper blog etiquette for this course)

Congrats on the beautiful blog page.Your photo on the page also looks quite professional. When I first met students who were unable to read, I hadn't a clue as to how to help them. It was my mentor teacher who encouraged me to use Phonics. It helped a bit but the teaching of sight words were missing.

  4. I wish that some of my fellow collegues will see themselves as reading teacher and not just content area teachers. I do hope that teachers use technology in teaching and learning so as to motivate students who are turn away by chalk and talk. I am also happy that you are willing to develop yourself profesionally to meet the needs of your students.
